Katrine Water Project
Katrine Water Project is a £120m contract for Scottish Water to construct a new water treatment works and additional clean water storage tanks adjacent to two existing storage reservoirs which supply almost all of Glasgows drinking water. The scheme is designed to bring the citys drinking water up to European standards, it is located in a very affluent and environmentally sensitive area in Milngavie, North of the city. The site is screened from the reservoirs by a substantial bank of trees and in order to connect the new works to the existing reservoirs, tunnelling beneath the trees was the preferred option.
The pipejacking works was carried out by a specialist team from B&W using an 1800mm Akkermann tunnelling machine. Carrier pipes were then installed within each of the tunnels and extended to a suitable position within the pits. The pits were then backfilled and reinstated ready for the final connections which will be carried out when the reservoir has been drawn down in March 2006.
The works were carried out on behalf of Amco Donelon and the Principal Contractor on site was M J Gleeson.
