Katrine Water Project

Katrine Water Project is a £120m contract for Scottish Water to construct a new water treatment works and additional clean water storage tanks adjacent to two existing storage reservoirs which supply almost all of Glasgow’s drinking water.

The scheme is designed to bring the city’s drinking water up to European standards, it is located in a very affluent and environmentally sensitive area in Milngavie, North of the city.

The site is screened from the reservoir’s by a substantial bank of trees and in order to connect the new works to the existing reservoir’s, tunnelling beneath the trees was the preferred option.

Chris Marley Civils Limited working for B&W Tunnelling carried out the construction of 3 no. drive pits within the main site and 3 reception pits on the banks of the reservoir.

The pipejacking works was carried out by a specialist team from B&W using an 1800mm Akkermann tunnelling machine. Carrier pipes were then installed within each of the tunnels and extended to a suitable position within the pits.

The pits were then backfilled and reinstated ready for the final connections which will be carried out when the reservoir has been drawn down in March 2006.
